    The Lotus Festival

This past weekend marked the 14th time that I attended the Lotus Festival in Echo Park. Since 1993, I have only missed the festival on one occasion.

Since I live so close by to the park, I was able to go twice in one day. In the afternoon, I joined Monica, my mother and my niece Victoria. And in the evening I met up with different friend, among them Miss Anna Eng (Kathy will be happy to hear this). I had a lot of fun!

There was much to see throughout the day: various vendors selling jewelry, clothing, plants and food. There were also dragon boats, Asian and Pacific Islander performers, fireworks at night and lots of fun people-watching.

Oh yes! The fireworks were pretty spectacular this year!!!

Thank you so much for posting pictures from Lotus festival. I had so much fun when I went there with you during one of my visits. Enjoy and have fun! We have heat wave here so we will go to the place near Ljubljana to be by the river and when it is too hot we go to the river to refresh.

    You're welcome Anka.
I remember the last time you were in L.A. you were around fro the festival.

Yeah, my favorite thing about the festival is the fireworks. They seem like they're bursting right above your head.

The park itself is usually pretty polluted and filthy but I think that's why the lotus flower is considered a sign of purity because these flowers tend to grow out of muddy, dirty water yet due to the leaves and upward growth of the stems, the flower never touches the dirty water. Echo Park use to be more run down and has gotten more gentrified recently but I always thought the lotus blossoms growing there was an inspirational sign to people that no matter what your background was, you can always rise above it.

The fireworks WERE bursting right over our heads - they were amazing!

It's always a joy to celebrate Asian and Pacific Islander heritage with you Rafael. What a good looking group of people.

Re: Echo Park. The last time I was there sans festivals & fireworks the face of christ was revealed to me on a corn tortilla (I have a picture to prove it). Anyplace that has lotus flowers and jesus I consider to be holy.

I wish I'd gone but of course I'd have left before the fireworks. Also, I read on this website a few years back that Jesus was to make his much-awaited Second Coming in Echo Park. A few folks showed up but unfortunately, Jesus did not. Oh well...

I miss the Lotus Festival. We don't have anything like it in NY.

Cool photos! I miss and don't miss the festival. Too many people for my old lady sensibilities. But the blooms are lovely, and I still love fireworks.
